Current Status : SSC CGL Notification, was to be announced on 11th April, as per the information given in the SSC Calendar, 2017, however, due to some reasons, Notification was postponed and it is was finally announced on 15th May. 

Currently, SSC is accepting the Online Applications for CGL Exam and you can Submit your SSC CGL Online Application form till 16th July, 2017

SSC had announced the much awaited dates for the postponed CGL 2017 Exam. As per the Revised SSC Calendar 2017, released on 10th April, Notification for SSC CGL 2017 will be announced on 16th May and Tier-1 Exams will be held from 1st to 20th August, 2017.

Usually, SSC announces the Exam Calendar, in the month of Oct Or Nov. In 2016, SSC Exam Calendar was released on 18th October, but due to some administrative reasons, SSC failed to announce the Notification on the 11th March 2017 and subsequently, Notification was postponed. There were also talks, that NCS may conduct the CGL Exam from 2017 onwards, putting all the rumours to rest, SSC finally announced the schedule of Upcoming CGL 2017 Exam.

Many a times, the Notification and Exam dates are postponed. The recent Example is SSC CHSL 2017 Notification, that was earlier scheduled to announced on 2nd July, 2016, but delay in getting the approval for conducting Online exam led to postponement of Notification to October. This is not just the case with SSC CHSL only, In fact all the major exam, including CGL Exam , MTS Exam and several other SSC Exams.

Not only the Notification, even exam dates are not confirmed either. Earlier for CGL 2016 Notification, the exam was scheduled to be held on 8th and 22nd May, 2016, but it was postponed to August/ Sept, 2016. From this we can only say that, that only SSC Knows, when it will announce the SSC CGL Notification 2017. But you should start your preparation, with Notification to be announced in Feb, 2017 and Exam in June / July, 2017.

Some of the major changes in the SSC CGL 2017 are

1) Time Duration is Tier-1 Exam is reduced from 75 minutes to 60 minutes only (100 Questions / 200 Marks)

2) Upper Age Limit for various posts have been increased by 3 years ie upto 30 years, for some of the Departments Like (CSS, IB, Railway, MEA, AFHQ, ITI etc)

3) For the First time, CGL posts are grouped into various categories viz Group A, B, C and D

4) Some New posts have been introduced for the first time in SSC CGL 2017. These posts are Assistant Accounts Officer, Assistants in Serious Fraud Investigation Office and Some other Ministries

5) Cut off Date for Determining the Age Limit and Educational Qualification is 1st August 2017.

6) Post Preference is required to filled at the time of submitting the CGL Online form, but you will be asked to fill the preference 2nd time during Document Verification and only at this time, it will be considered as Final

SSC CGL 2017 Syllabus for Tier-1, Tier-2

If you regularly appear in SSC Exams and particularly, SSC CGL Exam, then you should be aware of the craze that this exam has. In 2016 over 35 Lakh candidates apply for this exam and in 2017, it is expected that more than 40 Lakh candidates may appear for this exam, thereby making it one of the most competitive exams in India, next only to Railway Exams and IBPS Exams. 

The competitiveness of this exam can be judged by the fact that with every passing year, there is a significant increase in the Cut-offs. In the last 5 years, Cut-offs for CGL Exam has seen an increase of over 30%.

SSC CGL 2017 Syllabus : Tier-1 , Tier-2 and Tier-2

SSC CGL Exam Pattern comprises of three Tiers. viz Tier-1, Tier-2 and Tier-3 and all these Tiers are equally important, as you need to Qualify in each of these Tier's individually and Final selection comprises of performance in all three tiers.

Each Tier has its own Syllabus, Weightage and Duration, but Tier-2 Carries the maximum weighatge (400 Marks). Now, we will discuss each of these Tiers with respect to their Syllabus, Pattern and Scheme of Exam.

SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1 Syllabus

Tier-1 is the First stage of CGL Exam and all those who have successfully submitted their applications for CGL-2017 Exam, will have to appear in the Tier-1 stage.

1) Tier-1 is to be conducted through online mode ie It is a computer based Exam.

2) The No. of Questions in Tier-1 Exam is 100, with each Question carrying 2 marks, which means Tier-1 carries an overall weight age of 200 Marks and Duration of this exam is 1 Hour only.

3) There is negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.

Syllabus : The Syllabus for CGL 2017 Tier-1 comprises of  100 Questions, with 25 Questions from each of the 4 Sections given below

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  • English (25 Questions / 50 Marks)
  • General Awareness (25 Questions / 50 Marks)

Section wise CGL 2017 Tier-1 Syllabus

Here, we will discuss the Section wise Or Part wise Syllabus for SSC CGL Tier-1 Exam, this will give your the insights of topics that you need to prepare for each of these sections

English Section: In this section, Questions are mostly asked on Comprehension, Spotting Errors, Antonyms, Synonyms, Grammar etc.

So, you can prepare for the English section, with the Topics as mentioned in the RTI reply.

General Intelligence and Reasoning: This section includes questions both from Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. So, if you have studied the RS Aggarwal Book for Reasoning, then you will find yourself at ease with this section.

3) Quantitative Aptitude: Simply Knows as Maths. The Level of this Paper is upto 10th Standard Only. If, you are good at Maths till Matric, then this section can be very much scoring for you.

The Questions from this section are designated to test the arithmetic aptitude of candidates and their knowledge regarding Numbers and their computation.

4) General Awareness: This is the mystery section and there is No Defined Syllabus for this section. Anything can be asked from anything. You could be asked about Questions on Polity, Constitution, General Science, Current Affairs, Who is Who

But mostly we can categorize this section in 3 parts viz

1) Static GK: Questions in this part are asked from Indian Polity, History, Geography, Culture, Economics, Scientific Research etc

2) Science: In this section, Questions are asked on General Science and itsApplicationn in Daily use. Most of the Questions are asked by Physics, Chemistry and Biology upto 10th level

3) Crap : Question comprises of Current Affairs, Current Events, Books and Authors, Persons, Places in News, Abbreviations etc.

Books and Study Material for SSC CGL General Awareness

SSC CGL 2017 Tier-2 Syllabus

This is the 2nd Phase of CGL Exam and only those who Qualify the Tier-1 stage are shortlisted to appear for CGL Tier-2 Exam. Remember Tier-2 is also an Online Exam Objective Type (Computer Based).

The Shortlisting criteria for Tier-2 comprises of scoring the minimum cut off marks, as specified by the commission. For that, you need to score about CGL 2017 Tier-1 Cut off marks. 

CGL Tier-2 Exam Pattern comprises of 4 Papers, While Paper-1 and Paper-2 is compulsory for Everyone. Paper-3 is only for those, who have applied for Statistical Investigator and Paper-4 is for those who have applied for Assistant Audit Officer and C&AG

All the 4 Papers have individual Duration of 2 hours. 

1) Paper-1 (Quantitative Abilities) : This Paper comprises of 100 Questions, with each Question Carrying 2 Marks. The overall weighatge of this Paper is 200 Marks and there is negative marking of 0.50 for every incorrect answer. 

2) Paper-2 (English Language & Comprehension) : This paper tests your English Language Skills. Again, this Paper carries weighatge of 200 Marks with 100 Questions carrying 2 Marks per Question. Here the penalty for wrong answers is 0.25 marks.

3) Paper-3: This Paper comprises of Statistics and is only for those who have applied for the post of  Statistical Investigator Gr.II & Compiler. This Paper has duration of 2 hours and there are 100 Questions with 2 marks per Question. There will be deduction of 0.50 marks for every in correct answer.

4) Paper-4: Only those who have applied for Assistant Audit Officer and C&AG need to appear in this paper. This Paper has 2 Parts viz
  • First Part comprises of Finance and Accounts, for which there are 40 Questions, carrying 80 Marks (2 Marks per Question
  • 2nd Part will have 60 Questions on Economics and Governance, carrying 120 Marks
Overall, this paper carries weightage of 200 Marks and 100 Questions

Again, there you will lose 0.50 marks, if you attempted any question with wrong answer.

SSC CGL Tier-3 Syllabus (Descriptive Paper)

All those candidates, who Pass the SSC CGL Tier-2 Stage, will be called for Tier-3 stage. 

It is worth mentioning here that Shortlisting criteria For Tier-3, comprises of marks obtained in Tier-1 and Tier-2 taken together. Only those candidates, who scores minimum qualifying marks in both the tiers and rank high in the Merit List, will be called for the Tier-3 Exam.

 Earlier there was No tier-3 in the CGL Exam, there was only Interview after Tier-2 . But with the Government's decision to dispense off with Interview for Group B, C and D posts, SSC decided to abolish the Interviews for CGL Exam.

However, SSC added a Descriptive Paper in Hindi OR English to assess the Writing Ability of Candidates , which is a must for Government Jobs. It is for the First, Time that Descriptive Paper was introduced and conducted for SSC CGL 2016 Exam.

Tier-3 Date: CGL 2017 Tier-3 Exam is tentatively scheduled to be held on 11th November, 2017.

Syllabus for Tier-3 : The Paper would comprise of Essay Writing of 200 to 250 words and Letter / Application writing of 150 too 200 words.

1) The Duration of Descriptive Paper is 1 Hour only

2) You have to choose to write the Paper in Hindi OR English Only and no other Regional Language. Moreover, Part of Paper in Hindi and Part in English may result in Disqualification and Non-Evaluation of your Paper.

So Don't mix any of these Languages in your Descriptive paper

3) The minimum Qualifying marks in this paper is 33% only.

4) Questions in Descriptive Paper will be of 10+2 Standard.

Note: This Paper will be conducted in Pen Paper mode and not through computer based mode

Final Merit for SSC CGL 2017 Exam

The final merit for CGL Exam comprises of marks obtained in the Tier-1, Tier-2 and Tier-3 taken together. Shortlisted candidates from all the 3 tiers, will be called to appear IVth Tier, which is Qualifying in nature

1) Only those, candidates, who score, minimum cut off marks as decided by commission in Tier-1 will be shortlisted for Tier-2 stage. 

2) For Shortlisting to Tier-3 stage comprises of marks obtained in Both Tier-1 and Tier-2

SSC CGL 2017 Tier-IV Stage.

Only those candidates, who score the minimum Qualifying marks, as decided by the commission in all the three tiers, will be called for Tier-IV.

The Tier-IV comprises of Data Entry Skill test and Computer Proficiency test . While the Skill test is for those, who have applied for Post of Tax Assistants (In Central Excise and Income Tax) and the Computer Proficiency test for those who have applied for Assistant Section Officer in CSS.

Both Skill test and Proficiency test are of Qualifying nature and more information in this regard, will be uploaded on the SSC Regional Websites. 


There is every likelihood, that SSC will make No Changes, neither in the Exam Pattern Nor in the SSC CGL Syllabus 2017. However, if there are any changes made whether in Eligibility criteria and Exam Pattern, we will update the same on this page.

SSC CGL 2017 Notification

The Exact Notification Date for CGL  2017, will be known, only when the SSC will release its Examination Calendar for 2017. However, it is expected that, the Notification will be out in the month of Feb/March 2017.

For 2016 CGL Exam, the Notification, was announced on 13th Feb and exams were held from 27th August to 11th Sept, 2016.

The Notification for SSC CGL 2017 will be published in the Employment Newspaper and the Official Advertisement id PDF format, will be uploaded on the SSC Main Website and on the SSC Regional Websites.

The Exam date for CGL 2017 Tier-1 Exam, will be known only after the Notification, will be announced. However, the tentative schedule, will be known after the announcement of SSC Calendar.

Who can apply for SSC CGL Exam 2017 ?

Applicants who are willing to apply and appear in the SSC CGL 2017, must full fill the below mentioned eligibility conditions

1) Age-Limit: The minimum required age is 18 years and maximum required age is 27 to 32 years (Depending upon the post)

.Age Relaxations are there as per the Government of India Rules.

2) Educational Qualification: The minimum required Qualification is Graduation only. However for some specific posts there is need of additional Qualification. More, will be discussed, when the Official CGL 2017 Notification will be out.

What are the Jobs offered through SSC CGL 2017 ?

There are more than 25 post categories, for which you can apply and appear in the SSC CGL Exam. SSC CGL Offers primarily two types of Jobs.

1) Desk  Job
2) Field Job.

1) Desk Job: This is one of the most sought after job for people, who love Home to Office and Office to Home routine. We can say, there is no adventure in the Desk Jobs, but at the same time, it offers, comfort for family and social life.

The various posts included as Desk Jobs are Assistants, Clerks, Accountant, Auditor etc.

2) Field Job: As, the name speaks, Filed job refers to all those jobs, where you have to work outside your Office Or visit the office only for short duration and spend most of the time on the field. These are adventurous, Uniform Jobs and involves city to city transfers.

Field jobs provide you an edge over the Desk Jobs, as these involve carrying out Raids, Inspections and surveillance. Filed Job, can be of immense help, in impressing your Girlfriend's Father

The various jobs, that comes under the Field Job Category are : Inspectors in CBI, Sub-Inspectors, Examiners, Preventive Officers etc

Selection Process and Pattern for SSC CGL 2017

Knowing the Selection Process is must, if you are going to appear in SSC Combined Graduate Level Exam-2017. The Selection Process comprises of following:

1) Tier-1 Exam (Online Exam)
2) Tier-II Exam (Online Exam)
3) Tier-3 (Descriptive Paper
4) Tier-4 (Skill test /CPT)

Tier-1 Exam : This is the first stage of the exam and all those who have applied can appear for this Exam. The Structure of Tier-1 Exam is given as under

It is worth mentioning here that in 2016 , SSC had made some big changes in the pattern of Tier-1 Exam. 

Some of the changes, that were made in Tier-1 stage are:

1) Tier-1 will be held through Online mode (computer based)

2) No. of questions reduced to 100 with each section has 25 questions

3) Time Duration is cut short to 75 minutes instead of 2 hours.

4) Negative marking for every wrong answer is 0.50 marks

Tier-II Exam: This is the 2nd Stage of the Exam. Only those, who pass the Tier-1 Exam and score marks with in the range of cut off marks, will be called for the Tier-II Stage.

Only change made in the Tier-2 stage, is that, the exam, will be conducted through online mode (Computer based)

Note: Paper-III for Statistics, will be only for those, who apply for Statistical Assistant Post,

3) Tier-3 and Tier-4:  An additional Tier-3 and Tier-4 stages have been introduced, in the CGL Exam Pattern.

 While Tier-3 tests your Writing Skills (Descriptive) and Tier-4 is meant to test your Data Entry Skills and Computer Efficiency

Final Merit: The Final Merit is prepared by candidates over all performance in the all the three tiers, viz Tier-1, Tier-2 and Tier-3 separately.

How to Apply for SSC CGL 2017 Exam ?

If you really are impressed with the charm of Government Job, then SSC CGL is for you.

You cannot apply, until the Official Notification will be out. As we mentioned at the very start that SSC CGL 2017 Notification will be out in Feb/March 2017 and picture will become more clear, once, SSC will release its Annual Examination Calendar.

Online Application: To apply for SSC CGL 2017, only online mode is applicable. SSC had discontinued receiving the Paper application forms, a major setback for students with no background of Computers.

However, those candidates can go to the nearest cbyer cafes, and get their form filled 

Online applications, can be submitted at the below mentioned SSC Websites

1) www.ssconline2.gov.in
2) www.sscregistration.nic.in

Application Fee: SSC, in the one such organization that has impressed me, with its application fee. SSC charges only Rs 100 as application fees.

 Moreover, Female Candidates and candidates belonging to other categories
(SC/ST) are exempted from payment of application fees.

SSC CGL 2017 Admit card

Your admission to Examination Hall, will be made possible only if you have Admit card OR Call Letter with you. The Call Letter contains a Roll No., that gives you a Unique Identity.

It is this Roll No. that let your check your Result

The Call Letters, will be sent to your address, at least 2 weeks before the Exam Date.In case, the candidate, didn't receive his/her Roll No, at least One week before the Exam Date, then the candidate, must contact the Regional SSC Sub Office

Result of SSC CGL 2017 Exam

SSC CGL Tier-1 Exam is attended by over 40 lakh people and this is always a tiring job. But with SSC goes online, results will be declared much earlier than expected.

On an average, SSC will take, 4-5 months time, for declaration of result. But now with Online exam, ssc will announce the results in 2-3 months time and those who pass the CGL Tier-I Exam, will appear for Tier-II Exam.

The Declaration of Results and Final Selection and then appointment takes approximately an year's Time. So, its a long journey. So, start preparing today, and see your name in the Selection List.
